What Drives the Cost of an Emergency Callout

Emergency callout cost is driven by access, parts and containment, more than by the hour. Whether the isolation valve can be reached and closed, whether the failed part is a common one, and whether water has already reached a neighbouring unit are what separate a short visit from a long one.

Access is the biggest single factor

An engineer who can reach a working isolation valve stops the damage in the first two minutes and works calmly from there. An engineer who arrives to a seized valve behind a tiled panel, or a riser cupboard that building management must unlock at two in the morning, spends the first hour on the problem before the problem. Knowing where your valve is, and that it turns, is the cheapest preparation available to you.

Parts, and whether the van has them

A failed angle valve, a perished flexible connector, a common cartridge, all of these sit on the van and the repair finishes on the first visit. A discontinued mixer, an unusual pump, a concealed valve body from a brand that left the market, none of these do, and the job becomes a temporary containment now and a permanent repair when the part arrives. That is two visits and it is nobody's fault.

What has already been damaged

A pipe caught in the first ten minutes is a plumbing job. A pipe that has run for six hours into a neighbour's ceiling is a plumbing job, a drying job and an insurance conversation. This is why we say phone rather than email out of hours, and why the first call is always about stopping the water rather than discussing the repair.

Common Questions

Is a night callout always more expensive?

Out of hours work carries a premium in this trade, as it does in most. Whether the total is higher depends far more on what the engineer finds than on the hour they were called.

Should I wait until morning to save money?

If you can close the isolation valve and the leak stops, waiting is often reasonable. If the water cannot be stopped, or it is near electrics, waiting is the expensive choice by a wide margin.

Can you fix everything on the first visit?

Most things, because the common failures are stocked. Where a part is unusual, we make the property safe and dry, and return with the component rather than fitting something that does not belong.
